Damage; is the failure of a structure or structure element to perform the functions expected of it. Damage to a product can result from any of the material selection, design, manufacturing, shipping, assembly, and use phases, and determining the root cause of the damage can be challenging for manufacturers and operators. Lack of root cause analysis after come across to damage makes it difficult to prevent similar product damage that may occur in the future, and hinders manufacturers and operators from improving and developing products.
Common causes of damage are listed in the table below.
| REASON FOR DAMAGE | RATE (%) |
| Wrong material selection | 38 |
| Manufacturing errors | 15 |
| Heat treatment errors | 15 |
| Design errors | 11 |
| Unsuitable conditions of use | 8 |
| Environment conditions | 6 |
| Lack of quality control | 5 |
| Mixing of materials | 2 |
What is Damage Analysis?
Damage analysis is a comprehensive examination to determine the mechanism of damage and the root cause of the damage. Differences between the undamaged state of the product and the damaged state are revealed, and remedial solutions are being developed. Root cause analysis involves collecting and analyzing data and taking remedial and / or preventive measures. To accurately determine the root cause of the damage, an experienced damage analyst is required that can identify signs of damage, analyze observations, and achieve correct results using its logic.
İmplementation Method
- Selection of samples
- Collection of information about the history of samples (manufacturing method, heat treatment, conditions of use, etc.)
- Collection of information about the damage
- First evaluation meeting (selection of analysis methods to be used)
- Visual inspection of samples
- Determination of the chemical composition of the samples
- Determination of the mechanical properties of samples
- Mechanical and metallurgical investigation of samples
- Second evaluation meeting (evaluation of analysis data)
- Detection and reporting of damage mechanism and root cause
Equipment Used
- Sample preparation equipment
- Optical Emission Spectrometer
- Optical Metal Microscope
- Scanning Electron Microscope
- Electron Energy Distribution Spectrometry
- Hardness Testers
